Fall 21 ORC Week Seven: Design Revision
It’s week seven of the One Room Challenge which means we’re just ONE WEEK away from the final reveal!!! Even though I’m dying to show you photos of my progress, I’m holding off just a little longer and saving everything for next week. I can’t wait to share my transformed family room so soon!
This week I’m taking you back to the very beginning of the challenge where I shared my design plan and mood board. I’ve made some pretty big changes since then, and I wanted to go into more detail about the reasons why, as well as share my new design with you!
As a reminder, here was the original:
When I was putting together the design plan for my family room, the hardest part to figure out was the couch. This room is in my basement, and because the door is on an angle and the hallway is very narrow, getting a standard sized couch into the room isn't possible.
To complicate things even further, I wanted a material that would hold up to cat scratches. This really limited my options, especially finding a couch that could be delivered by the deadline. Everything I read about cats and furniture said velvet was one of the best materials to go with, which is what led me to the green velvet couch shown above.
I was so happy with my bold couch choice until the other furniture and decor pieces started to arrive. The rug and flooring looked beautiful together and created such a sophisticated, neutral color palette, but they looked different in person than they did online. Luckily, I loved them even more and felt they fit my design style better than my original concept, but I kept thinking about the green couch and how out of place it would look with the other pieces.
I ended up cancelling my couch order and revisited my design plan with a new idea in mind. Although I really liked the plan before, I LOVE this one now! So druuuuumroooooll please:
Funnily enough, this Abisko Sectional from Article is the first couch I looked at and even created an initial mood board with! The more I thought about how I’d use my family room and the comfy, kick-back-and-relax feeling I wanted to create, the more I just knew I needed a sectional couch.
It was one of very few options I found that split completely in half, making it possible to get through the door. And a big plus, it would arrive by the deadline!
Here’s the floor plan with everything laid out in the space:
My final design includes decor from some of my favorite small businesses, a few investment pieces, and some budget friendly pieces. I couldn’t be happier with this new direction for my family room!
I can’t wait to share the final reveal with you next week!
Thank you so much again to my partners who are helping me with the One Room Challenge! You’ll see their beautiful pieces in the final reveal next week:
