Fall 21 ORC Week Six: Painting & Flooring

It’s week six of the One Room Challenge and WOW this room has come a long way since I started working on it at the end of September! The drywall framing and installation phase of this project felt like an eternity, but replacing the stucco and paneled walls with new drywall completely transformed this space. Even with the additional stress of working with a contractor, it was worth it!

Except for electrical trim, all of my contracted work is complete! I love working on home renovation projects, and I’ve been impatiently waiting to get back in there and finish the family room. This will be the last time I’m sharing progress photos before the final reveal in two weeks, so get excited!! This is the home stretch and it’s almost time to see all of the hard work pay off!

Normally I take my time with painting, but because of the various delays I faced from other aspects of this renovation, I decided to rent a paint sprayer from Home Depot to speed things up. I prepped the room by taping off the windows, lights, and fireplace, which I’ll finish resurfacing before the reveal.

The prep work took some time, but once the room was ready to paint, the whole process went incredibly fast. I was able to cover the entire room in two coats in less than 24 hours.

I used Zinsser Drywall Primer followed by two coats of BEHR Premium Plus Paint with an eggshell finish in the color Bit of Sugar. This is the same paint color I’ve used throughout my home.

For the flooring I decided to go with a Luxury Vinyl Plank by Lifeproof in a really pretty Dusk Cherry color. This style of flooring locks together, which I like a lot more than the peel and stick flooring I used in my kitchen. I started installing the flooring yesterday afternoon, and I’m amazed at how quickly it’s going!

I based the layout of the flooring on the front edge of the fireplace so I wouldn’t have any weirdly cut pieces in a focal point area. I used that as my starting point and loosely laid out pieces of flooring towards the back left corner of the room to get measurements for each one.

This flooring can technically be cut with an X-Acto knife and snapped in half, but because it has so many layers, I ended up using my table saw to speed things up. I’m about half way through the room and I’m SO happy with how everything is looking!

Next week I’ll be sharing my new mood board and the reason why I decided to make some revisions to my design plan. All I’ll say for now is I liked the plan before, but now I love it!
