Spring 22 ORC Week One: Before Photos & Digital Renderings

It’s that time of year again! The Spring 2022 One Room Challenge starts today and we couldn’t be more excited to be participating in this very special Tenth Anniversary edition of the ORC! Last fall we transformed our family room from a dark, unused basement space to a bright & welcoming room we now love spending time in. We can’t wait to do the same with our upstairs middle bedroom, which will become my new home office.

This week we’re sharing our before photos, some digital renderings I created, and a breakdown of our design plan. Here is what we have in store:

Before Photos

This is the smallest of our three upstairs bedrooms, but surprisingly, it’s considered the master. It’s a unique space with a long dormer window nook, east and south facing windows, and a tiny attached bathroom.

When we’ve had some free time from our other home projects, we’ve been working on removing the wallpaper in here. It’s been a lower priority on our to-do list until now, and we can’t wait see how different this room looks with a fresh coat of paint from our amazing partners, Clare.

One discovery we made when lifting up the thick carpet was the original hardwood floor hiding underneath. We won’t know how the entire floor looks until we rip up the whole carpet, but we’re so happy there isn’t a layer of linoleum glued to the wood like we have in our guest bedroom. This will be our first time refinishing hardwood floors, and we’re excited to take on the challenge!

Digital Renderings

My first step in every design project is creating a digital rendering of the space. This allows me to try out lots of different options before we commit to buying anything. Here are two views of the room as they currently look and what we’re ultimately aiming for with the final reveal.
